Top Ten Famous Poker Players

This list is not necessarily ranked by degree of fame. It was compiled by the Top Texas Holdem editing team and by opinions polled from poker players of varying levels.

Johnny Moss

Moss was largely responsible for the development of high stakes poker in Las Vegas, in addition to being the prototypical poker professional. Johnny Moss is known as the "Grand Old Man" of poker. He has won the World Series of World Championship three times.

Johnny Chan

Rising to international recognition with his WSOP main event victory in 1987, and again in 1988, Johnny Chan continues to be one of the most recognized names in poker. He was immortalized in the movie "Rounders" as he played himself as the best poker player in the world. Chan has also written for Card Player magazine and he is currently appearing in the GSN series High Stakes Poker.

T.J. Cloutier

One of the most well respected players in the tournament scene, T.J. recently wrote a book called "Championship No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold'em". Among his many accomplishments, T.J. was the all-time leading money winner at the World Series of Poker in 2001.

Annie Duke

Annie Duke is one of the best female poker players and she manages her own web site http://www.annieduke.com/index.php where you can find all necessary information about her. Now she serves as a consultant and a spokesperson for the online poker site UltimateBet.com where she can be found playing poker on occasion. In addition to successful poker career, Duke wrote an autobiography named: Annie Duke: How I raised, folded, bluffed, flirted, cursed and won millions at the World Series of Poker.

Phil Hellmuth

Miami John Cernuto

Miami entered the 1988 Superbowl of Poker and won his first big pot and the seven-card-stud title. In 2003 he has won the Heads Up Poker Tournament in Vienna, beat 381 players at the L.A. Poker Classic Event and placed fourth in the Limit 7-Card Stud Championship in the United States Poker Championship at Trump Taj Mahal. As of 2006, his total live tournament winnings exceed $3,900,000.

Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen

Nicknamed "The Prince", Scotty took part in a huge number of tournaments and walked out with cash more than a hundred times. It is clear now why this guy is a real poker millionaire and his prize money are among the best results in the whole world.

Doyle Brunson

Nicknamed "Texas Dolly", Doyle has 8 WSOP bracelets to his name and has already been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. "Amarillo Slim" Preston

Amarillo Slim, Poker Ambassador and non-stop source of Tall Tales, has been competing in WSOP events since their inception, with a number of bracelets to his credit. He is one of the few old-time poker stars still around along with Doyle Brunson, who Slim ranks first as the player he respects the most. Amarillo has the reputation of putting poker on the map and, more than any other player, bringing respectability to poker and bringing poker out of the backrooms which is one of the reasons why he receives so much respect from poker players.

Eric Seidel
